Cuso International is a Canadian volunteer sending organization that has worked in Guyana since its formation in the 1960s. Cuso’s mission statement is “Workingin inclusive partnerships to eradicate poverty through equitable and sustainable development. Volunteers are placed with VYC for 6-12 months assisting with Women Empowerment and Career Guidance.

Title: VYC’s Afterschool Interactive Math and Science Program
Start and end dates: 2012 – present
Results: ExxonMobil supports VYC’s Afterschool Interactive Math and Science Program since 2012. With the endorsement from the Ministry of Education and support from ExxonMobil, the organization is helping to improve the Science and Math skills of High school youth in a number of schools in region 4 using STEM education. The program uses the existing school curriculum, grades 9, 10 and 11 teachers through various interactive activities to expand the learning of students. The subjects taught include: English Language, Human and Social Biology, Biology, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Physics and Chemistry.

Title: Big Brothers & Big Sisters Program

Results: Guyana Goldfield Inc/ AGM Inc. supports the strengthening of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program has been hosted by VYC since 2003 with the aim of assisting disadvantaged children who face many obstacles to access mentoring and educational support in order to reach their fullest potential.
The program heavily focuses on helping primary school students perform well academically. Thus, VYC will include the application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) combine with its mentoring to reach primary school children in communities of Albouystown and Lodge.
